After talking with a High School Resource Teacher at Hudsonville High School, our Resource Team realized that there are 5 critical skills that students must have when entering High School. These skills are at the core of everything we do during Resource. Have you practiced a Big 5 skill today?
Self-Advocacy:
You know what you need to be successful and do what is necessary to make sure that you have it! If you're in class and are struggling to keep up with the notes, ask the teacher if you can get a copy after class. Maybe you're having a hard time focusing because you sit in the back of the room, so politely ask to have your seat moved to the front. Finding Information Effectively and Efficiently: If you're at home and realize you forgot what your math assignment was, do you know what to do? Maybe you're stuck doing research for your Science Fair project. Utilizing online resources, such as teacher wiki pages, can really be helpful. Today, there are an endless amount of online resources such as videos, articles, and even online textbooks. Knowing where to look is key! Homework Habits: To be effective at completing homework correctly, you have to know what works best for you! For many, setting aside a place and time to complete homework is helpful. Keep everything you need close by, including highlighters, a calculators, laptop, etc. Don't overdo it, take breaks when you need to. You'll find that working for small chunks of time might be more effective than sitting at your desk for 2 hours straight. Asking for Help: Sounds easy enough, but are you skilled at knowing when and how to ask for help? Do you say, "I need help!" the second you take out your assignment before even reading the directions. Knowing how and when to ask for help takes practice. The most important thing is you try to do it yourself first. Then, if you're still struggling, raise your hand, ask a peer, or maybe talk to the teacher after class. You could even email your teacher to let them know you want to stay after school for extra help. Sustaining Effort: In sports, the end of the game is no time to give up and take it easy. In fact, it's probably the most important part of the game! Sustaining effort means you know how to push through when things get tough. Don't give up, give effort! Take a break if you need to, but always come back to what challenges you. You can overcome it, but only if you sustain effort! Pictures from Google Images
